Dear Colonization

Dear colonization,

Oh, all the pain you have caused to the beautiful people of the Island of Puerto Rico.

Oh, all the pain you have caused to the people of the world, that have been stuck in time within their minds believing that the present reality is all that they deserve.

Oh, the pain you have caused to the beautiful black people of Loiza who have been left on the island as slaves,

and their pain echoes in the minds and the bodies of our people today.

Why can’t we see that we are still being colonized?

Why can’t we see that there is still White supremacy?

Why must the supremacy of the white man overpower the spiritual power of the dancing tribes?

Why must the people resilient people of the island continue to be resilient, only to keep being ignored when they cry for help?

I ask why we let the psychological manipulation to continue.

I ask why we don’t start to fight back, to be LOUD.

I ask why don’t we finally stand up for not only ourselves but for the pain that is being felt around the world.

Passionately, Paola Benitez
